Coastal Holidays in Yorkshire

Thursday 5th May 2016

Yorkshire's coastline has it all; spectacularly beautiful, literally teeming with wildlife and home to some of the Britain's most traditional beach havens, boasting numerous Blue Flag beaches.

Yorkshire is also bubbling with a hip art and culture scene; proof of which can be seen in seaside resorts like Whitby and Filey plus a host of other beachside towns including Staithes, Bridlington, Robin Hoods Bay and Saltburn-on-Sea.

These towns are dotted with dramatic cliff walks, marine bird sanctuaries and fabulous moors making them ideal for Yorkshire family holidays by the beach. In North Yorkshire lies Saltburn-on-Sea, the most surprising of Victorian Spa towns, where you'll find a mixed crowd of surfing dudes, water sports fanatics and families with children.

Saltburn's beautiful broad beach is wild but wonderfully equipped and lies at the bottom of soaring cliffs while it’s soft sandy shores are divided by a traditional pier and a fabulous funicular railway. There are loads of water sports, kids activities and beach facilities while the town centre is bustling and includes an impressive local theatre, great pubs and restaurants that serve excellent and affordable food and drink.

If you want to delve further into Yorkshire's heritage coastline and fascinating history you should make a point of visiting Staithes, a quaint historic town where a tangle of pretty fisherman cottages are sandwiched between towering cliff headlands.

Its numerous winding lanes hide some unique pubs and restaurants and the local beach is intimate and sandy, perfect for happy days spent relaxing and rock pooling. The surrounding cliffs and headland are filled with nesting seabirds and make-up part of the famous Cleveland Way nature walks.

As you approach the heart of Yorkshire the rural coastland gives way to some very beautiful bays and headlands topped with some cool historic ruins, marking the first of the three most famous seaside resorts in Yorkshire; Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.

Scarborough claims to be the country's first seaside resort with records of bathing dating back to the 16th century! Today it is still the most popular seaside town in Yorkshire and its summer roster of activities and entertainment continue to attract endless summer crowds. The long list of activities is complemented by two top-notch blue flag beaches, each with their own authentic promenades.

Whitby is by no means out of place in this ‘who’s who list of the best beaches in Yorkshire’ as it offers much more than two exquisite beaches, thanks to all kinds of arty and literary events and cultural attractions including museums, historic trails through the medieval part of town and a fascinating working harbour that offers boat tours and fishing trips.

Filey is equally gentrified but offers a slower pace and is more about natural beauty and the beach. Kids will love the deep creature filled rock pools and parents will love the safety aspects of the beach coupled with its excellent facilities including pony rides, sailing lessons and deckchair hire.

Next door to Filey there is a wildlife paradise to be discovered at Bird Garden and Animal Park where a mix of exotic animals and birds will thrill the family on cooler days.

Amongst the grand three resorts lies the very picturesque Robin Hoods Bay. Here you can dodge the deckchairs for a day and indulge your senses in some of Yorkshire's hearty elements. It's all about un-spoilt beaches and soaring cliffs that overlook traditional fisherman's cottages and miles of coastal scenery. For those who love history there is a funky little museum and plenty of fossils to be found around the pebble beach.

A little further South lies Bridlington, a picture-perfect fishing town that can be seen on most of Yorkshire's Tourist Board brochures. Bridlington offers two great stretches of golden sand where kids can enjoy donkey rides and bucket and spade fun.

A pretty atmospheric harbour is filled with colourful fishing boats, which also sell the catch of the day to locals and visitors. Bridlington is made-up of a pretty 'new town' and a quaint old town. Whilst the new town offers lots of family friendly entertainment including a funfair, Sewerby Hall and Gardens, a Museum, zoo, pitch and putt and good old fashioned tearooms.

The old town offers quaint old pubs, antique shops, galleries and beautiful architecture. For some of the best cliff walks and bird watching near Bridlington you should visit Flamborough Head and Bempton Cliffs, just a few minutes' drive away and home to a striking chalky headland, pretty coves and caves to explore. Bempton Cliffs climb to over 400 feet and offers a wonderful colony of marine wildlife to explore.

Wherever you decide to spend your beach holidays in Yorkshire you will find incredible nature and history, along with great seafood, friendly folk and a host of fabulous family friendly beaches.
