Cornwall Top 5 Surfing Spots

Tuesday 28th March 2017

With hundreds of beaches along the Cornish Coast to choose from, we look at five which offer consistent surfing conditions for both beginners and experienced board riders. Most of these coastal towns also offer an affordable range of accommodation on or near the beachfront in Cornwall.

Polzeath is one of the best known spots for beginners as the waves rarely peak above a metre and a half, which ideally keeps the more experienced surfers away leaving you free to bump and grind it out with mostly learners. Accommodation is generally quite expensive in Polzeath with some amazing beach houses on offer within walking distance of the beach and big enough for groups of eight or more.

Fistral Beach in Newquay is regarded as one of the best beaches for experienced surfers in Cornwall, if not the South West and delivers a good size quality swell consistently throughout the year. Parking and facilities are in good supply and rental accommodation ranges from affordable chalets to seafront apartments with direct beach access.

Sennen Cove is not only a beautiful beach but also home to a decent swell which at times can rival some of the best surf in Cornwall. Sennen Cove is located just around the corner from Land’s End in West Cornwall where you'll find a good selection of Sennen holiday homes. These cottages are highly sought after and if you hope to land one, you'll need to book well in advance.

Constantine Bay in North Cornwall is popular with surfers and body boarders and offers reef breaks as well as reasonable quality waves on the main beach. The reefs and occasional rips would suggest this beach is better suited to experienced surfers although being almost three beaches in one, beginners should find a vacant spot to try their hand.

Porthtowan is a favourite with both learners and experienced surfers due to the consistency of waves, in other words you can turn up pretty much at any time and find suitable conditions to get out and strut your stuff. Accommodation in Porthtowan is plentiful and inexpensive, but like most coastal rentals in Cornwall it’s always best to plan ahead.
