The Canary Islands, sometimes referred to as the 'Canaries’ are a Spanish group of seven volcanic islands that lie in the Atlantic Ocean just west of Morocco and the Sahara that are famous for their year round sunshine. The most popular islands are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, then there are the more rural ones of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Each Island enjoys a completely different flavour and personality and offers the holidaymaker a great variety and combination of spectacular volcanic landscapes, multicoloured beaches, quiet whitewashed villages, vibrant modern resorts and mountainous terrain.
The only thing that they all have in common is the fabulous reliable weather which is why so many people rent beachfront villas here. A popular destination for groups, the Canaries boasts a large number of holiday villas that sleep 8 or more people, many with pools and just a moments walk to a nearby beach. Starting with the largest of the archipelago is Tenerife, whose established resorts and exotic choice of white, black and golden sands leave visitors wanting for nothing. Lanzarote offers dramatic dark landscapes which surprise holiday makers with contrasting golden bays and offers the full range of accommodation from luxury villas to budget apartments.
Gran Canaria has many rocky shorelines which opens onto coves, cliffs and little bays whilst Fuerteventura boasts the largest number of beaches, mostly dune backed and wild. La Palma is by far the lushest while the less touristy La Gomera and El Hierro also enjoy some impressive forests and nature parks as well as their share of great beaches. When it comes to self-catering Canary Islands accommodation near the beach you are spoilt for choice, with a host of private villas and apartments to rent, many with sea views with some perched on the beachfront with direct beach access.
