Cap Ferret is a rather elegant yet rustic coastal resort on the peninsular of Arcachon Bay, a glimmering estuary within France's stunning Aquitaine region that has never suffered from over development. Wild pine forests, enormous dunes, sandy beaches and the pounding of Atlantic waves surround the town. Whilst it is a popular destination for the Parisians and neighbouring Bordelais, it never gets over crowded, as there are very few hotels. In fact the mix of clued-up holiday renters, cultured city slickers and local fishermen give Cap Ferret a unique and unpretentious vibe. The centre offers some great bars and eateries, especially the oyster shacks that Cap Ferret is famous for. The other famous attraction is the monster Dune of Pilat, the biggest sandbank in Europe, which lies in the lagoon opposite the town.

But this place is not about tourist attractions, it’s for those who relish the good things in life - the outdoors, fresh food and natural beauty, where cars are replaced by kids on bikes, where gardens are filled with flowers and where the ocean thrashes day and night while the elements cleanse your soul. That said, there are also a lot of chic establishments that will cleanse your wallet too, but it’s all understated and those on a budget won't stand out. The self-catering Cap Ferret holiday homes listed here include beach chalets located on or near the beachfront, ideal for families with children.
